Disappointed in this, started OK but main character was so dull it was hard to care what happened to him. The depressing ending is signalled early on, shame it didn't come sooner.

Why this book made the Booker short list is beyond me. Unbelievably dull and boring. I didn't finish it and was told by someone who had, that nothing happened.

As I bought this book for a Christmas present it is very hard to review. I am sure that my son-in-law will like it very much.

Some strong aspects: memory, inescapable influences of childhood. Not altogether easy to sympathize with Futh, although scared by life he does come across as a hit of a prick. His mother doesn't convince. Esther credible character. Poor ending. Lazy writing.

I was sorry I read this book. The 'hero' was totally unsympathetic. The message of the recollected words and smells was hammered home without subtlety. Awful

I stayed with it - its not without merit - but it exists in a small world which becomes increasingly cramped as it goes on.

Slightly disappointing for the Booker shortlist. it is not a book whose content lifted my sole. Too melancholy for me.

I really didn't go for this. I finished it. I felt it was badly written. Seemingly pointless repetition. Perhaps I missed something

Three stars was just aboutr deserved. The writing jogged along in a seemingly bland manner without showing any form or pace or urgency. The title bore little resemblance to the content. The passage was slow and desultory getting to any form conclusion was the least concern of the author. The story was an average read being soporific and an inducement to sleep rather than being closely involved.
The characters were like the tale grey and unexciting.

This is an easy to read book but unfortunately I found it boring, repetitive & with a predictable ending. Very disappointing.
