4.0 out of 5 stars Normandy from the German point of view, 23 April 2012

This review is from: Waffen-SS Armour in Normandy: The Combat History of SS Panzer Regiment 12 and SS Panzerjäger Abteilung 12, Normandy 1944, based on their original war diaries (Hardcover)
This book looks at Normandy from the records of "SS- Panzer Regiment 12 and SS-Panzerjager Abt. 12" and in some ways it is similar to H.Meyers 12th SS book.

The book itself is very much taken from German records and does not attempt to address Normandy from an Allied perspective, the information is well presented some copies from divisional records being presented in German and translated into English, the book reads well it is user friendly and is perhaps best read in conjunction with other works which detail the German view of Normandy. (If you have not read anything on Normandy I would not start with this one.)

Value for money , yes - the quality of the product is good , font size is good, photographic and map reproduction likewise good , clear and detailed, if you are using the book I would spend a few £ on a good ma of the region , not that the maps in the book are poor quality but by and large it will make orientation easier.

I can't really fault the text it reads well and it reflects the records as they were recorded , photos are good but many will be known to experienced readers on the subject and a number are credited to Mark Yerger who will be well known to many.

The Appendices make good reading and there is a lot in them a number of recommendations for awards, unit strengths and details of enemy tanks and vehicles destroyed, very detailed but there are no doubt mistakes and errors included dating from the conclusions of those who complied the divisional/ unit records at the time.

At first I looked at the book and thought is this what I wanted, not quite sure but it grows on you and is to be fair (IMO) a good addition.

Faults, given that the wok concentrates on the German units mentioned it excludes "The Big Picture" but in its favour there are a lot of good footnotes and I have the feeling it will interface well with other broader works on Normandy.

Worth buying.

Excellent reference material, albeit less generalised than the 'normal' Normandy reference material. Book feels reassuringly expensive, good clear photos in general, and worth buying by the 'in-depth' afficionado

This book seems to meet my requirements, in detailing the activities of a Waffen SS formation in Normandy. Only just started reading it, but have high hopes.

The Book arrived way ahead of time and very well wrapped and in perfect condition. I think it is the best history of the Normandy campaign published to date.
