5.0 out of 5 stars excellent
For anyone who enjoys the poems of Ritsos this is an excellent Translation/interpretation of his poems. The book is concentrated on the shorter poems , full of vision and compacted narrative. this is already amongst my favourite books . A huge thank you to David Harsent , who I hope will work on a follow up with more shorter poems.

It's difficult to get a handle on Ritsos. (He wrote over a hundred books.) The Guardian's critic found this 'charming'; I don't think so. The biographical note fails to mention Ritsos's suppressed homosexuality, which informs and goes a long way towards explaining the evasive and melancholy surface of his work. This pointless exercise almost feels like a vanity project; whose reputation is it designed to buff? If you want to read Harsent, and why not, Legion is about as good as it gets (I mean, as good as poetry gets) and if you want to read Ritsos, read Edmund Keeley. And David, homage is a perfectly respectable English word - Middle English, actually - stressed on the first syllable; to write it in the French style (italics and all) is pure barbarism. More fromage?
