4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read
This is the remarkable story of one young man's struggle to discover and come to terms with his family's dark secrets of Nazism, and how God miraculously found and saved him. Full of punches, its authenticity holds one's interest throughout, making it an intriguing and at times quite shocking story, but one that ultimately comes through to the light. As I say, a good...

This is a remarkable story by a remarkable man. It's not so much what Werner Oder says about his immediate family/forbears, but what he doesn't say! As I say, a good read, in the sense that it shows just how powerful God is, in the spirit realm, to save those who are trapped in even the worst nightmare of hereditary backgrounds and spiritual oppression.

I write these notes from the viewpoint of a Brit who has lived in Vienna since 1999 and so in a geographical sense my journey has been opposite to Pastor Werner Oder. This is an important and challenging book in which the author describes his struggle to escape the legacy of a Nazi war criminal father and the involvement of the Austrian people in genocide. The word escape has to be qualified because history cannot be changed however Werner Oder describes how the grace of God enabled him to become reconciled to the past and so free to embrace a fulfilling future.

Austrians bear significant responsibility for the Holocaust but this subject continues to be a taboo subject. One could say there is a sense of denial which attributes all of the blame to Germany. Werner had the courage to confront the history that he inherited and so he is an example and an inspiration to us all.

This is a compelling personal account - fully deserving of 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Batting with Nazi demons, 24 Aug 2011
This review is from: Battling with Nazi Demons: The Astonishing Journey of the Son of an Austrian War Criminal (True Stories) (Paperback)
First time i have read a book front to back in a morning..... An amazing and Intriguing book, painfully honest and striking to the heart. This is a MUST read for anyone seeking to understand the mind of the anti-Semitic or Nazi from first-hand experience with a real relevance for today. Wernor Oder bares his all & shares his all, from his encounters with cruelty and near death to the ultimate escape. This book has answers to those questions which Nazi, Jew or any other man battles with day to day. The Nazi's were defeated in WW2 but still the root of anti-semitism remains, Wernor Oder is a living war hero who will keep fighting the good fight regardless of being honored or not. A truly unique, inspiring & exposing story which you will want others to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and challenging, 18 Jan 2012
This review is from: Battling with Nazi Demons: The Astonishing Journey of the Son of an Austrian War Criminal (True Stories) (Paperback)
Werner is an extra-ordinary man who has an amazing testimony of Gods love and saving power. What he went through in his younger years can only be described as a nightmare. His story tells the truth of what really happened during WW2 and the devastation upon the Jewish people. It is quite amazing that a man brought up in a Jew hating family could become one of their greatest lovers. Only a real and truthful experience of Gods changing love in his life can really explain it.
This is not a book to 'enjoy' but to challenge us that the things mentioned in never happens again.

Battling with Nazi Demons

Book Review

This truly is one of those rare books that you read from cover to cover in one sitting even though I had one or two false starts getting through the painstaking thoroughness of the research which is so evident in the first 50 pages. With no punches pulled, no euphemisms, Werner Oder delves into his family background and uncovers the grim truth of his father's ardent Nazi activities. This research alone is a credit to Werner Oder's quest for truth and gives credence to the whole volume.

"... the sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the sons ..." Exodus 20

Although a post war baby, Werner Oder did not escape his father's evil legacy and Wener's gripping testimony relates not only the mental torment of guilt and shame but, more vividly, the physical dangers as he wrestled with demons of death and destruction, hell bent on taking his life.

"... I (God) show love to a thousand generations, of those who love me and keep my commandments.." Exodus 20

Werner Oder found freedom from this death curse by putting his trust in the one who gave His life for him, in Jesus Christ. Reconciliation with God led to a deep-rooted desire for reconciliation with God's chosen people. With typical steadfastness and determination, Werner Oder pursues this aim and he has become a significant ambassador of reconciliation not only to Jews whether that be in Israel or Poland or elsewhere, but also to gentiles in many different countries.

Many people battling with their own demons will benefit from this book. Battling with Nazi Demons is a strong biography with a powerful message that needs to be put into the hands of a wide readership.

This book gives an insight into the historical and spiritual background of the Nazi movement in a way that no other book or documentary has ever done. But most of all it is a graphic demonstration of the grace of God at work to save whatever the iniquity. We are all equal in this, but the grace of God is greater. This book contains therefore the greatest of all treasures.

This is a remarkable story by a remarkable man. It's not so much what Werner Oder says about his immediate family/forbears, but what he doesn't say! He writes movingly about how he researched his father's role during the time of the Third Reich in Germany, and of the effect this had on Werner himself and others. Then he moves into revealing how he became free from hideous nightmares, much sickness and oppression, finding peace and healing (wholeness) in Jesus, the Prince of Peace. This isn't a run of the mill story, it's a riveting, moving account of an amazing life. I couldn't put down the book from the moment I started reading it, till I'd read the final word. Read Werner's message and take in the unwritten message. Get to know the man: you won't regret it! JL.

Meet, in this book, 'one of God's most unusual sons'! Meet a man whose past will horrify you but whose present will inspire you. I have had the privilege of meeting and spending time with the author in person on more than one occasion and can testify to the truth of the transformation that the Lord God of Israel has wrought in him - for his good and for the good of the many people with whom he shares his story. It's the heart behind the words that is inspiring. At times I found the details of the author's family hard to piece together - but even in this, we see the Europe wide events taking place - events which were to have significant influence on the history - and future - of Europe and the Jewish people. May this book inspire you to search for Truth until you find Him, and take a stand for what is right - even now. KMF

I was not too happy with the photos as they were not terribly clear. However, what did come across, and what is more important, was a picture of the totally callous mind of the author's father, for example, giving training to soldiers in how to shoot innocent people. It was very obviously extremely difficult and disturbing for Werner to have known of his father's cruelty to fellow humans. I was disappointed at reading of the complicity of isolated members of the Catholic clergy who gave comfort and support to these evil and unashamed killers of innocent Jewish people. I am a Catholic and proud of the very many good things that the Church has done and continues to do but not proud of the completely wicked and inexcusable support of the Nazi regime given by those, thankfully, few members of the clergy. This was a brave story to have told and the author has done well to have come through such a dark period of his life. I am glad I bought the book.
