5.0 out of 5 stars Versitile information for every early years setting, 13 Jun 2011
This review is from: Enabling Environments in the Early Years: Making provision for high quality and challenging learning experiences in early years settings (Early Childhood Essentials) (Paperback)
This book is part of the early childhood essentials series by Practical preschool Books. The series offers detailed yet easy to dip into guides on various topics such as Inclusion, Behaviour, Planning and Transition, as well as this title.
Enabling environments has been written to appeal to all types of early year's provision, from schools, to playgroups, to childminders. There are examples for working in different sizes of environment including advice on making the most of small spaces and managing shared use areas, where equipment needs to be packed away.
The book is well laid out, in clear sections that answer most of the common dilemmas faced in early years in maximising ones environment. Liz Hodgeman has done a very thorough job in helping the user to recognise the importance of the environment in meeting the E.Y.F.S requirements and guiding the reader in how to assess their own setting.
Information is given for indoor and outdoor environments separately but there are other sections of the book where the reader is encouraged to look at their setting as a whole to audit and then establish practices and resources that support choices, positive behaviour, user involvement, diversity and many other values any good practitioner should uphold.
The book is very readable, with many examples from differing settings to be inspired by. There is a good balance of word to illustration and an some great sample templates for audit forms, risk assessments and policies.
This is a lovely book that would be an asset to any setting that is looking at ways of making the best use of their environment, regardless of whether this is a big change or simply making the best of what they already have.

I found the book really helpful, the pictures were really colourful and bright. I like the fact they talk about all early years i.e nursies, childminders etc the tables were really helpful the checklists gives you ideas for your own setting. i also like the reflection points it makes you think more. The book is written directly aimed at Early Years workers so its simple to the point writing, which is fantastic, i will def be buying the rest of the series of books.

Daughter required this and others for her University course, (Early Childhood Studies). Book must have done the trick as she now teaches Special needs Kids at a local school.
