5.0 out of 5 stars 50 tales from the man who's seen it all, 5 April 2011
By
This review is from: Cally on the Ball (Hardcover)
Any fan of Liverpool Football Club will find this an enjoyable read. Ian Callaghan played 857 times for Liverpool in the 60s and 70s and it would be fair to call him one of Merseyside's greatest sons. He played under two of the Club's greatest managers, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, and he won every honour in the game including Footballer of the Year in 1974. He was also a member of England's World Cup squad in 1966. Since retiring from the game he's maintained his links with the club so, as the front cover of the book states, over the past 50 years there isn't much he hasn't seen at Liverpool. Ian shares many anecdotes with us about players, managers, back-room staff and one or two celebrities he's met along the way. He gives us his views on players past and present, always speaking with respect, and he identifies which in his opinion are the greatest Liverpool players for each position. He also indicates who he believes is Liverpool's greatest player. That man is still playing but you'll need to read the book to find out his identity. In one of his many interesting observations, Ian tells us that Bill Shankly actually used to practice his `spontaneous' one-liners before he spoke to journalists. We thought Shanks was quick-witted when in fact he was simply well rehearsed and the lines had been tested on colleagues and players before they were used with journalists. Ian even reveals that Nelson Mandela is a Liverpool fan. Despite all his success, Ian comes across as modest and unassuming and he is one of those individuals for whom everyone seems to have a good word. An easy read and if you're a Liverpool fan you'll love it.
