the curious case of the clockwork man by mark hodder an alternative steam punk adventure of
burton and swinburne mark hodder demonstrates more wit , imagination and outright humour in this one book than i have read in 100 other steampunk novels involving time travelling president rasputin, medieval ghosts swearing parrot telegraphs, rotorships and the tichborne...

3.0 out of 5 stars Curiously Unbelievable.
Both a wonderful romp and curiously over the top! Rather spoilt by its somewhat excessive length and gory body count.

The author is a knowledgable, hugely enthusiastic writer who would be well advised to keep a blue pencil to hand and to score out swathes of otiose and over - descriptive writing, as it appears on his steam typewriter in future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Starts well then loses its way, 1 Dec. 2012
This review is from: The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man (Burton Swinburne 2) (Paperback)
Read the first in the series about Spring Heeled Jack and in line with my expectations this started out in much the the same way however about two thirds of the way in it loses focus and takes far too long over reaching it's conclusion. This is an enjoyable book with a good basic story but it could have been far better with a stronger editor to cut back its excesses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Curiouser and Curiouser!, 11 April 2014

This review is from: The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man (Burton Swinburne 2) (Paperback)
The first Burton and Swinburne novel, The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack, deserves all the kudos already heaped upon it, and this is a worthy successor, blending steampunk, sci-fi and fantasy with fine characterisation and first-rate storytelling. It's a proper penny dreadful and a page-turner into the bargain!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dire, 16 May 2012
This review is from: The Curious Case of the Clockwork Man (Burton Swinburne 2) (Paperback)
The first book in the series was quite enjoyable - though overlong perhaps - but it was interesting and had some clever ideas and even a laugh out loud moment or 2. This follow-up started ok but my it did become dull as ditchwater a third of the way in - pages and pages of the same descriptive stuff that I can only think of as padding as they didnt add anything to the story - could easily have been cut down by 100 pages. It was a real struggle to finish and now Im put off the final one ...
