5.0 out of 5 stars Another hit from the 'Storecupboard Cookbook' series, by Paul Hartley....., 4 Feb 2011
This review is from: The Horlicks Cookbook (Storecupboard Cookbook) (Hardcover)
....even for those confirmed 'Hot Chocolate-aholics' among us!

And even I had to admit that until I really thought about it, Horlicks seemed an unlikely recipe enhancer, being something my grandparent's generation seemingly over enthused about! I think that even they would have been surprised at the very thought of adding it to jive up an otherwise bland and boring accompaniment like 'Bread Sauce' or to further enhance an already thoroughly naughty 'Toffee Sauce', for example!

Measuring in around 19.5 cm square, this informative book has durable board covers in the current HORLICKS light/dark blue theme which opens up to 80 shiny high quality pages with:-

'Forty stunning dishes from Paul Hartley, the undisputed master of storecupboard alchemy! .......'

Following thorough in the fresh blue and white colour theme, the book starts with a 'Contents Page', which also serves as the index of recipes and is followed by a double-page spread of 'Horlicks Milestones'.

The book is littered throughout with snippets of archive material & images, along with illustrations of ten of the recipes.

Recipes are clearly laid out with the title, a relevant opening note, the number of servings, the list of ingredients and a clear method.
A note regarding size of dish and/or any extra equipment required, e.g. baking parchment or electric blender, is common, along with the odd 'Horlicks Hint', including the unlikely name the drink could have been given!

Recipes include:-

* Horlicks Brownies
* Horlicks Tiffin
* Buttercream Sponge Cake
* White Chocolate Croissant Pudding
* Pecan Toffee Ice Cream
* Horlicks Smoked Chicken and Mushroom Risotto
* Bacon and Broccoli Pasta Carbonara
* Kedgeree
* Methi Gosht
* Devilled Kidneys
* Scallops on Creamed Cabbage
* Smoked Trout with Malted Horseradish Sauce

and the most incredible :-

* Horlicks Chocolate Cream Roulade

from pages 14/15, headed up with:-

'This is a truly delicious roulade with Horlicks at every turn giving it a deep, rich malted flavour. This makes a scrumptious afternoon treat.'

Which is no understatement as it turns out, especially if served with a 'nice cold scoop of peppermint ice cream', as advised!

However, the 'West Country Pork' from pages 42/43 is an equally wonderful dish with the Horlicks-enhanced 'Cider Sauce' drizzled over, alongside some baby new potatoes with a blob of melting butter.

Next on my agenda, I think, will be 'TiramaHorlicks', from page 20 -

'Summer nights and Italian food are a marriage made in heaven - this TiramaHorlicks will have Italian chefs desperate to call it their own.
It's truly delicious.'

And I do not doubt it for one moment!

The recipes are brilliant in this book.

Had to "up" the amount of Horlick's i used as found that you couldn't taste that distinct Horlick's flavour.

The brownies were the best i have ever made, lovely and gooey stickiness.

Great book! I LOVE Horkicks, and I love that I can now use it in so much of my everyday cooking. I have most of the other books in this series, and the recipes never disappoint.
I must say however, the Ketchup and Marmite books contain quite alot of interesting bits relating to product history... this book lacks on this as there is far less info than in others.
Still glad to have the book though :-)

Even if you do not like Horlicks the recipes are absolutely delicious. Ingenious little book and makes you think outside the box.
