A book that is full of great ideas that capture the spirit and essence of the importance of children (and adults) adopting a growth mindset. I have used the ideas in this book with schools both in the UK and abroad. It should be read by all teachers, support staff and parents. It is also good to know that it is written by Barry Hymer who is a man with great integrity as well as immense knowledge.

This is a brilliant little book that makes a significant contribution to the growing movement to put developmental learning back into mainstream practice in our classrooms. The key ideas of plastic intelligence, hard problems are more motivational than easy ones, meta-cognition, social learning and the importance of making mistakes are not new but have been increasingly displaced in our competitive, market-based school system by 'quick results' cramming and rote learning. This book is a must for teachers but also for everybody who cares about the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning in our schools.

Written for teachers - but as a grandparent looking to do the right thing, I found it very informative and thought-provoking. I give only four stars as one aspect of child rearing not fully examined is the 'negative' parent - the type who constantly runs their child down, or, as my father did, takes a 'why are they teaching you that rubbish' attitude to schoolwork; the authors concentrate on the negative effects of the over-praising parent. Overall, I'm convinced that the growth approach is a very constructive one. I'll be passing the book on to my daughter - she's the one with the youngsters.

Bought this for our daughter who is Head of Psychology in a Girls' Grammar School. I like the ideas, and thought this would be a useful teaching tool for her.
