5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Laura Knight's open air paintings, 17 Nov 2012

This review is from: Laura Knight: In the Open Air (Paperback)
This book was produced to accompany an exhibition of the same name that has travelled, in 2012, from Penzance to Nottingham and Worcester. But the book stands alone, quite apart from the exhibition, as an excellent introduction to the art of Laura Knight and especially the paintings that she did out of doors. It covers work she did at Staithes, in Cornwall and at Malvern and is beautifully illustrated. Although they are touched on the book does not deal with the pictures she produced of the theatre, the circus and her work at the Nuremburg Tribunal, those being out of the scope of the 'Open Air' subject matter. Well worth getting as the exhibition brought together paintings from many private and world wide public collections and the illustrations include many of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sunshine age of innocence in oils., 27 Dec 2012

Dame Laura Knight, to those old enough to admire her work, is usually remembered for her theatre scenes; this lavishly produced book brings her into the open with exhilarating effect. Cornwall in the twenties and thirties was a retreat for for impecunious painters where the light was bright and free and the accommodation affordable. The text is well written and the biograghy accurately researched. The book is a joy and makes you want to go out and paint!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very welcome introduction, 4 Oct 2012

This review is from: Laura Knight: In the Open Air (Paperback)
Dame Laura Knight, 1877-1970, had an artistic career spanning eight decades. This catalogue, published alongside a 2012 exhibition, focuses on watercolour and oil paintings, drawings and etchings of scenes of the countryside and farmland, sea coasts and inlets from throughout this long career. It focusses in particular on the periods that she and her husband, Harold, (the first married couple to both be elected as Royal Academicians) spent at artists' colonies in Staithes, Laren (in The Netherlands)and Cornwall, and in London and Malvern.
Elizabeth Knowles illustrates the ways in which the styles and subjects of the Knights' pictures changed over the years with profuse coloured illustrations and black and white photographs. It is a pity that the pictures included in the exhibition were not numbered as this would help to relate them to comments in the text. Some of the pictures used to show her influences are also very small.
However, these do not really limit a very useful introduction to Laura Knight's open air paintings which, in addition to pictures of the countryside, cliffs and seascapes include horses, gypsies, circus, fairs, a boxing match and even the Nuremberg War Trial. This is a well-presented book on one aspect of Laura Knight's oeuvre and is recommended to anyone interested in 20th century British painting.
For those seeking a wider perspective, there is a retrospective exhibition of Laura Knight's work planned for 2015 at the Dulwich Art Gallery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative, 22 Oct 2013

This review is from: Laura Knight: In the Open Air (Paperback)
As a former teacher of Art, I found this addition to my library verbally informative although I was disappointed by the space devoted to photographs of Knight's work, having expected rather more in the way of illustration. As such, to me it was just an appetite-whetter. Even so, it was fairly good value for money and the seller was very good indeed, both in response time and in packaging.
