5.0 out of 5 stars Growing up a century ago., 18 Feb. 2010

This a beautifully written autobiography describing life at the beginning of the 20th century. It draws a vivid picture of a boy growing up under the rule of an autocratic and egotistical father who drags his family around the country to escape the bailiffs. Anyone who lived in South London during the last war will be struck by the similarities in the latter part of the book, with Zeppelins replacing Doodlebugs.

Just a great, great book. Pritchett gives us a vivid portrait of a vanished age and a superb account of a mind growing in a strange family environment. The story is compelling, but what grips even more is the power and precision of Pritchett's prose. He really just writes the most perfect sentences.
