4.0 out of 5 stars History of VTOL, 30 July 2013
This review is from: Vertical Take-off Fighter Aircraft (Hardcover)
In this highly illustrated work , Bill Rose has covered the history of the operational and experimental VTOL aircraft - while the familiar ones like the Harrier , Balzac and f-35 are included in detail- this is a first to include details of the many the scrapped projects from west Germany ,US navy , Spain and France which make interesting reading.

Bill has taken great pains to document what went wrong with some the projects - though the Russian story is a bit disappointing , it could have been covered in more detail as Yefim Gordon's excellent Yak Vtol fighters provides a good reference.

It appears that the Midland Counties publishing label is being replaced with the new Classic Publication brand with the same excellent glossy paper - but they seem to have done away with the dust jacket.

While this is a must buy - the book loses one star as there is no bibliography or references and I feel one chapter on the evolution and design considerations for Vtol would have been very useful and is missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This will fly off the shelves !!!, 6 Aug 2013
This review is from: Vertical Take-off Fighter Aircraft (Hardcover)
Despite lengthy delays in the publication date, when I finally received a copy of yet another excellent book by Bill Rose I was not disappointed.

As usual from this author, there is great attention to detail and the usual high quality graphics. Plus it's packed with new and interesting information.
I wholeheartedly agree with the previous reviewer relating to the more unusual concepts including submersible aircraft carriers and supersonic fighters launched from submarines. I was totally unfamiliar with any of these facts. But this well researched and informative piece of work details many intriguing facts.

This is one of those books that has been well worth waiting for.

I thoroughly recommend it to all enthusiasts of VTOL aircraft

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent stuff, 1 Aug 2013
This review is from: Vertical Take-off Fighter Aircraft (Hardcover)
Published by Ian Allan under the Classic name, this appears to be a high-quality "Secret Projects" title, that has been packaged to reach a wider market. The content is really good, with plenty of well-researched interesting VTO fighter projects stretching from the late 1930s, to the present day. Many obscure concepts and designs are covered, alongside the more familiar prototypes.

Aside from the purely vertical launched interceptors, US Navy 1950s prototypes, proposals like the Bell D-188A, the ill-fated French Snecma C-450 and superb looking Fokker D-24 concept, this book includes considerable information on the Harrier, the advanced postwar German VTOL fighter projects, the unsatisfactory Soviet designs and the current US/UK Lightning combat aircraft. I have the impression that Bill Rose made an early decision to try and avoid lengthy duplication of other books that cover aircraft like the Harrier and Yak-38, but there is certainly plenty of interesting detail in these sections.

Some of the most unusual concepts described include supersonic fighters launched from submarines and submersible aircraft carriers, which I was completely unaware of before reading this book.

I must agree with another reviewer that a bibliography would have been helpful, although an increasing number of authors seem reluctant to provide this.

I have all of Bill Rose's previous aviation/space books and this latest offering does not disappoint as a useful reference. Filled with interesting illustrations and comprehensive technical specifications, it is well worth the price and highly recommended!
