5.0 out of 5 stars Still inspirational after all these years, 27 Sep 2010

This is such a great book - I'm so pleased it has been re-published. While you might imagine it would be dated (and it is in some ways, but charmingly so) it is still so full of colour and inspiration that despite the years that have passed since so much of it was written, everyone who loves or would like to love French cooking should read it, or read it again. Elizabeth David writes in a way that makes you see, smell and taste the food she talks about so vividly. You don't need the fancy photo-art that typifies so many modern food books to awaken your senses - she does it with words. This is not just a food book, it is literary genius. Buy it and give it to your friends for Christmas. If anything will make you want to cook, eat, travel and write, this will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real food writing., 2 Sep 2011

This book should be compulsory reading in schools, a collection of stories and recipes as previously published in magazines and newspapers by this wonderful food writer. Reading this delightfull book will jolt you back to all the things we have forgotten about simple food and it's preparation, and if nothing else the making of a lovely starter or supper dish from a tin of sardines is worth the title price, with modern TV food programmes pushing ever more expensive ingredients, how lovely it is to go back to a time when things were all together less pretentious and sensible, a truly 'must have' book for anyone who cooks.

5.0 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFULLY NOSTALGIC READ, 19 April 2011

This review is from: An Omelette and a Glass of Wine (Hardcover)
As an avid collector of cookery books - over 4,500 at the last count - I've planned to get a copy of this celebrated book for so long. I'm totally enjoying every word that the late great Elizabeth David wrote in her newpaper and magazine columns, as 'An Omlette and a Glass of Wine' is a collection of her fascinating journalistic offerings. Full of fascinating reminiscings from all her travels, as well as the most intriguing recipes, and simple and sensible thoughts on food. This work prompts you to want to sometimes ditch all the complicated and elaborate recipes of today, and make a nostalgic return to the glory days of 'back to basics', as far as meal preparation and dining goes. This is a book which you will want to dip into over and over again....that is, if you don't get carried away and want to devour it from cover to cover in one sitting.
