5.0 out of 5 stars 50 Glorious Years of the Irish Georgian Society, 20 Mar. 2009
Damian O'Brien (Dublin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Irish Georgian Society a Celebration (Hardcover)
This splendidly written book by Robert O'Byrne, chronicles the first 50 years of the Irish Georgian Society and is a 'must have' for any enthusiast of Ireland's architecture and the decorative arts.

With great aplomb, O'Byrne writes of the many battles waged (some won, some lost) by the society over the past fifty years to protect and conserve Ireland's unique architectural heritage. Founded in 1958 by the Hon. Desmond Guinness and his late wife Mariga, the Irish Georgian Society has done more than just campaign for preservation and conservation, it has also educated the public, in Ireland and abroad, of the wonders of Irish architecture and for this we should all be very grateful.

Filled with wonderful photographs, this book reads in a very racy and gossipy style, whilst at the same time, treats its subject with due seriousness and respect. Despite all the good work done by the Society in the past fifty years, much remains to be done. Purchasers of this book can rest assured that by buying this book, they too are contributing to this most worthwhile cause.

Definitely a 'must have' for all fans of architecture, the decorative arts and indeed of Ireland, itself.
