4.0 out of 5 stars Steam '67
I so wanted to give this 5* being a great admirer of David Shepherd's railway paintings - many of the photographs within this book are the artist's own and, whilst recording both the grime and the glory of the end of steam on the Southern Region, reflect his interest in the effect of dirt and light on colour. It's not just the engines he records but the workaday ephemera...

3.0 out of 5 stars Let down by lack of proof reading
A very poignant book showing steam basically in its death throes. It brought back memories for me of sneaking into Nine Elms shed which is where the majority of David Shepherd's photographs were taken. The photographs themselve are of an acceptable standard but I found the accompanying text less so. There are numerous text errors due to poor proof reading prior to...

I so wanted to give this 5* being a great admirer of David Shepherd's railway paintings - many of the photographs within this book are the artist's own and, whilst recording both the grime and the glory of the end of steam on the Southern Region, reflect his interest in the effect of dirt and light on colour. It's not just the engines he records but the workaday ephemera of the steam age as it draws to a close.
The loss of a star is owing to the poor proof reading - very early on in the text, I was confused - twice - by the word 'crack'. I assume the word should be 'track'. This error is compounded by the paragraph in which it is found being repeated on the next page!
Still, this apart, an excellent addition to the shelves of all fans of Southern steam, of which I count myself one.

A very poignant book showing steam basically in its death throes. It brought back memories for me of sneaking into Nine Elms shed which is where the majority of David Shepherd's photographs were taken. The photographs themselve are of an acceptable standard but I found the accompanying text less so. There are numerous text errors due to poor proof reading prior to publication. The book is unpaginated so I cannot refer to specific examples by page number. One 'howler' is the reference to loco 73965 at Fratton shed. There are gaps in the captions whereby much more information could have been given. The book is nicely printed and bound but leaves something to be desired especially as it contains the work of such a renowned artist.

Certainly worth looking at by those who like historical pictures and paintings. Truly an artists view, wonderfully and realistically done.
