I am an ex-journalist and used to be obsessed with the news but I have barely bought a newspaper for months - I've just maxed out on the misery. Murder, war, recession, Silvio Berlusconi; yes I know they're out there, but I don't need to be gorging on the grim details daily. So instead I am now getting my daily news (during my morning sit-down) from this excellent little yellow book. As well as being relentlessly cheerful, it's witty, erudite and surprising. It reminds you what a huge, various place the world is, and of (as that famously uncheerful man Philip Larkin put it in an uncharacteristic line) "the million-petalled flower of being alive".

Received a review copy (ebook) of this, and found it rather engaging, despite the typos and obvious lack of proofreading. Instead of the misery and gloom we hear about on the news every day, just open this book and be reminded that splendid things have (and still do) happened, giving us much to be thankful for, and yes, cheerful about.

Don't know what to buy for the husband/father at Christmas? This would be an excellent stocking filler.

This definitely cheered me up. It is intended as a fathers day gift so fingers crossed it goes down well. I love it, not only funny but also quite informative!
