This review is from: The Innocent Anthropologist: Notes from a Mud Hut (Paperback)
Extremely funny and readable account of the authors time spent amongst the Dowayo people of the Cameroon. The author does not galmourise his time doing fieldwork in a remote African village but his very honest about the bouts of loneliness, boredom, disillusionment and illness he suffered. However this interspersed with humorous narratives in which the authors isn't afraid to laugh at his own foolishness or misfortune. In particular the authors initial struggles with the local language led to some hilarious moments and misunderstandings. Slowly the author gets to unravel the mysteries of the Dowayo culture which is very interesting to read about. all in all an excellent book.

I read this account of a social anthropologist's fieldwork in the 1980s when it was first published. My friend was also a social anthropologist and strongly recommended it. Sadly I lost my copy and so I was very pleased to see that it has now been reissued - unfortunately with a 'serious' cover which I think will put off a general audience. The original cover (not shown on Amazon) better reflected the amusing nature of the book.
This is an extremely amusing account of how western eyes can misinterpret unfamiliar situations and repeatedly draw the wrong conclusions from them. One of the funniest books I have ever read.

This book was chosen for one of my book clubs.

The person who chose it remembered it as "light", but it wasn't really.

It was quite interesting, but I felt bogged down in the ritual of the local people being studied.

The author seemed to have more trouble with the French officials granting him permits than with the native people.

The book's OK, but I didn't really get involved with it.
