4.0 out of 5 stars This book made me want to be Welsh., 25 Mar 2001
By
A fabulous tale of a young boy's passage through childhood painted against Cardiff in the grip of the second world war. It's as funny as it is poignant and will leave you with a warm sepia afterglow. It's a crime that Dannie Abse is relatively unkown, even in Wales, as he's a fantastic poet. Anyway enough guff, buy the book, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll probably wish you were Welsh, I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book review of Dannie Abse's semi-autobiographical work, 5 May 2012

Book was received promptly and it was second hand. Appeared to be off the market but since discovered it was re-published. Nevertheless it was worth it. Read this as one of the books for a Book Club. Surprisingly interesting and easy to read. Words flowed smoothly and evocatively. Hadn't realised what an amazing family Dannie Abse hailed from. Both his brothers contributed enormously to making a difference to other peoples' lives. If you are interested in reading about a childhood based in Wales in the 30's and finding out the background for pretty illustrious siblings - well this is the book for you.
