4.0 out of 5 stars Lost World, 3 Feb 2010

This review is from: Mapping Doggerland: The Mesolithic Landscapes of the Southern North Sea (Paperback)
The book begins with a history of how people gradually came to realise that the coastline isn't fixed but that the North Sea had once been land, in relative terms not all that long before the building of the pyramids.
Then comes a good and up-to-date background section on current understanding of the Mesolithic.
Only half way through does the meat of the book begin, i.e. maps of how the North Sea used to look, derived from oil exploration data.
It's a pity that conjecture is out of fashion with academics, if only they'd taken the plunge and come up with a best guess overall map of how the lost rivers fitted together and with the modern day Thames and Rhine.
Unsurprisingly given today's fear of global warming, it ends with a warning that if massive flooding occurred once it could occur again.

This review is from: Mapping Doggerland: The Mesolithic Landscapes of the Southern North Sea (Paperback)
Highly technical book and undoubtedly requires some understanding of both GIS and geoarchaeology, but contains a wealth of information about the area and if you are interested in Doggerland or submerged ancient landscapes, you should check it out.

I'm not a professional archaeologist, but enjoyed this as an account of what can be/is now being done with digital techniques, and the co-operation between archaeologists and oil-and-gas men. Look forward to even more extensive surveys.
