I have enjoyed Tim Hayward's writing and appearance in other media over the years and this book has a stack of suggestions, instructions and recipes that appeal to anyone who has an interest in creating or transforming their food. There are a load of ideas that you may only try a couple of times, like creating a smoker in your back garden, but there are enough things in here that you can do on an 'everyday' basis. An ideal present for Christmas, I'd be asking for it if I hadn't already bought it!

I am a professional chef and was hoping for some innovative inspiration .
The book, whilst well presented, is very basic and has a few alarming errors.
Some of the photography and in particular the Smoked Salmon carving illustrate the real amateur nature of the book. Using a boning knife to carve a side of wonderful smoked salmon can only end up in the mess as illustrated.
I did get some inspiration and have gone on to read much more technical books

Having been amused by Tim Hayward's writing in the past I was keen to see how he would fill the pages of a book. Entertainingly - it turns out.

Living in a city centre flat, I'm unlikely to ever build my own barbecue pit or smoke generator but I'll enjoy reading about how to do it whilst snacking on the bread and preserves I've made courtesy of Tim Hayward's lively instructions.

A great gift for the cooking curious.

I love this book. Written by a greedy man with an excellent turn of phrase, it's super-practical, with beautiful illustrations + it's FUNNY - see p55 comments on fish leather, for example. It's got some clear nods towards the trends currently pressing foodie buttons (make your own gin, roast your own coffee) but equally, masses of things you properly want to try. I'm never going to build a cold smokehouse or a gym locker offset barbecue, for example, but the chapter on cheesemaking has made me run out to find rennet. And the chapter on salami makes it sound remarkably simple, when I'm sure it's not. What could be more reassuring than a food DIY book written by someone who is demonstrably still alive + cooking? Recommended.

I bought it for my husband for Christmas. He has dipped in and out of it and has enjoyed the bits he has read.
I saw it while looking for something else and thought as he likes Heston and most cookery books that he would enjoy this. He hasn't been singing and dancing over it but has thought it interesting.
