5.0 out of 5 stars TV 21 is "Go"!, 18 Mar 2010

Think how merchandise has become part and parcel of TV and movies these days: games, books, toys, clothes, to name but a few. George Lucas understood this when he kept back the 'merch' rights to Star Wars in 1977 - and look what happened to him. Apart from Disney, no-one else in the 1960s understood how to create an 'eco-system' of products to support his TV shows better than Gerry Anderson. This book is proof that Gerry had "seen the future, and that it worked" - such was the excellence of TV Century 21 (latterly known just as 'TV21') comic and the standard of artistry on display. These beautifully drawn comic strips gave the TV shows a cinematic dimension, and lent the characters (portrayed by puppets in the programmes) a dynamism and excitement that the shows couldn't achieve.

Take this beautiful book (the first in a series, currently boasting four volumes), and just look at the standard of sixties comic art and storytelling. This was no cynical attempt to grab the kids pocket money - Gerry insisted that standards should be as high as possible, in the service of his TV programmes. And like the recent Beatles' 2009 Remastered CD sets, this other example of 'sixties popular culture has been beautifully restored, using today's technology. In a very few cases, a little bit of 21st Century fixing has had to be done, due to damage to the original plates. But generally the standard of reproductions here are so good, I'm going to buy second copies of these books so I can frame some of these strips and hang 'em on the wall. I wouldn't normally condone such injury to books, but with comic art this good, it's got to be seen. Maybe the publishers could make poster-sized reproductions of so we don't have to vandalize the books?

Remember to get all 5 volumes! I enjoy these very much! British comics at it's best. I hope there will be more books.
