This review is from: Dragon's Claws (Paperback)
Dragon's Claws, as far as the UK comics market was concerned, was ahead of its time. First published in 1988, it ultimately ran for ten issues before poor sales saw an end to what was a brilliant comic.

Set far in the future, the world is slowly but surely dying, order starts to break down, poverty increases and so on. The World Development Council (a successor to the UN..?) responds to this by inventing The Game, an action-packed and violent 'sport' played across the globe by teams consisting of, well, mercenaries it seems. The Game spirals out of control and due to the increasing casualty rate and obvious psychosis of some of the players, Dragon's Claws, arguably The Game's greatest and most honourable team, retire.

It soon becomes clear that the world is descending into even worse chaos, so the National Union for Retired Sports Experts (N.U.R.S.E. - great, isn't it?) reforms Dragon's Claws and deploys them as a commando squad to eliminate the various terrorist threats around the world.

Although written 20 years ago by Simon Furman (who went on to write for Marvel in the US on a number of their flagship comics), the themes featured resonate just as well now. The action is mainly centred on Greater Britain (as it apparently becomes) and is wonderfully drawn by Geoff Senior. The characters, especially the team's leader, Dragon, are all fleshed out and the over-arcing plot was building up to be quite epic before the comic sadly reached the end of its run.

This book includes all ten issues plus one issue of Death's Head (which did a crossover with the Claws). It also includes the covers and other items of art included with the originals. Obviously worth buying if you remember the comic, and even if not, it doesn't get much better than this for British comics.

Took me back to my comic reading years, love the story, love the art. Tis a great shame the story was never concluded, at least Death's Head had closure!
