5.0 out of 5 stars A Rollicking Rural Romp, 22 Sep 2007
This review is from: Fiddler on the Make (Paperback)
As with his 'Snowball Oranges' series of travelogues and 'Bob Burns Investigates' whodunnits, this book rests very much on Kerr's wry sense of humour, vivid location descriptions and astute observations of the idiosyncracies of human behaviour.

It's an offbeat country caper with loads of laughs, but there are poignant moments as well, and there are times when Kerr's mischievous fun-poking swings joyfully between farce and satire. Down-at-heel aristocrats, toffee-nosed 'townies' and dodgy local government mandarins, look out!

However, it's all feelgood-factor stuff (shades of H.E. Bates?) and you'd need to have a very dull funny bone indeed not to be tickled by this quirky yarn.

In a cast full of wonderfully-eccentric characters, my favourite is the moped-mounted delinquent Granny. Read this book and, like me, you'll wish you were in happy-go-lucky Fiddlerland beside her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fun Scottish Ribtickler from the maestro!, 7 Nov 2007

This review is from: Fiddler on the Make (Paperback)
Peter Kerr has a wonderful, wry wit and sense of fun and this is displayed once more in his latest oeuvre set in the less than sleepy Scottish village of Cuddyford. There are all sorts of intrigues going on and a host of mad, bad and colourful characters including the formidable granny and wily Jigger McCloud. It's quite an intricate and mischievous plot which will keep the reader on his toes, and happily I can reveal, without spoiling the grand denoument, that all came good in the end. A thoroughly entertaining and cheering read!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Highland capers ...., 23 April 2008
By
This review is from: Fiddler on the Make (Paperback)
Another Highland caper from Peter Kerr.

I had anticipated that this would be the next in the series of crime romps featuring Detective Inspector Bob Burns, but it is not, this is a fresh tale featuring a whole new cast of characters. The lead character being Jigger McCloud, ably assisted throughout by the characters in his family; his motorcross riding wife - Nessie; son - Davie; daughter - Maggie; and his octagenarian moped-riding, gun-toting grannie! Peter Kerr introduces a whole host of other characatures to help the story move along with many a chuckle.

It's a distinctly tongue-in-cheek light-hearted work, just look at the names of some of the characters; Ludo Gormlie-Crighton, Commander Horatio Plimsoll-Pompey, Johnny Ardonski, Mr & Mrs Littleton-Nimby, Dr Quentin Spon, Babu Ng ....

It's an entertaining and light-hearted read and I recommend it to all of Peter's fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another hugely entertaining story from the author of Thistle soup, 10 Dec 2007
By
This review is from: Fiddler on the Make (Paperback)
With the same tongue-in-cheek humour as his "life in Majorca" real-life stories, in Fiddler on the Make , Peter Kerr uses his brilliant writing talent to entertain his readers with a story whose plot will keep you guessing until the end. Unexpected twists and cleverly woven stories are the trademark of his fiction books. Oh! And if like me you have always wondered what Scotsmen really wore under their kilt, here's your chance to find out, straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
