Yes, I agree with prevous reviewer. Not at all user friendly and very unimaginative choice of films. You're much better off with one of the eds of the Virgin film guide which have reasonably long reviews of a much wider selection of films.

Just received this book as gift. It reminds me why I don't read Time Out reviews any more. Unfortunately it's pretentious twaddle and the reviewer has even misinterpreted a couple of key films.
Better to find a Halliwells for ALL 20th Century films and another (smaller) for more recent ones. At least Halliwells include 2-3 different reviews on major films to give a broader view. Time Out doesn't believe in others' opinions.

Both the previous reviewers were reviewing the kind of book that this was not meant to be. It discusses about a 1000 or so films that merit your attention and contains dozens of fascinating essays on why they might just "change your life". One or two of the writers are more concerned about projecting their own image than those on the screen but for the most part it is full of interest and entertaining and informative reading

the obvious format for this book would be a list of films by title, sadly they opted for an essay by genre format which makes for a good read but a useless reference guide.

also the choice of films was hugely lacking. absolutely fine if 'the godfather'. 'pulp fiction' and 'starwars' are at the top of your 'best films ever' list but otherwise i'd skip it.

...mostly kack.

I THOUGHT IT WOULD CONTAIN MUCH MORE PAGES, BUT IT IS STILL A GOOD BUY. I WOULD NOT LIKE TO HAVE PAID FULL PRICE FOR A BOOK OF ITS SIZE.
IT IS THOUGHT PROVOKING & MADE ME THINK ABOUT FAVOURITES AGAIN.

'1000 films to change your life' is not meant to be:

1. A reference guide to 1000 films agreed upon in a poll/by critics
2. The be all and end on all on the best films ever
3. A rigidly structured, encyclopaedic database of films

This book is split up into chapters headed 'Joy,' 'Anger,' 'Wonder' etc. In each chapter there are various essays loosely based around this topic as well as top ten lists in each one. The writers are either well-established critics, actors or directors (e.g. Isabella Rossellini, Ian McKellen, Tony Leung) and they are given free reign to write about that which interests them or they feel passionately about.

This book is fun and provides much food for thought as well as giving space to lesser known films and directors.
