5.0 out of 5 stars The Frugal Life
An excellent book, well written and expertly edited to give a concises set of pointers to better manage your money. It's fun and an easy read, also the advice it contains, actually works in the real world. A total must for anyone trying to save a few pennies without being borring and having no social life. Give it a go, I did.

A bit disappointed, having read previous reviews in the press. Recently
redundant, I was hoping for more than just common sense and found that I'd
already covered just about everything already (other than preparing a
freshly shot rabbit for dinner, that is!). I found the writing style amusing though and it is quite a good long read but I think that anyone...

A bit disappointed, having read previous reviews in the press. Recently
redundant, I was hoping for more than just common sense and found that I'd
already covered just about everything already (other than preparing a
freshly shot rabbit for dinner, that is!). I found the writing style amusing though and it is quite a good long read but I think that anyone who has managed to live beyond their teens could be frugal by not buying the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, different or inspiring, 18 April 2011

I know a book on frugal living isn't going to be realistic when the advice includes keep chickens to get cheap eggs. (As a hen keeper I know that even the best organic eggs are much cheaper to buy than the ongoing cost of keeping back garden hens!) That advice is indicative of the book itself. It's mainly quotes from comments to the author's website, so there's a lot of loose, untested 'a mate told me' stuff, rather than proven wisdom.

The book does include the usual basics of change phone/electric providers and don't have big nights out. But beyond that there's really nothing much to say beyond stick to a budget and give home made gifts.

If you've never, ever considered cutting your spending this book could be helpful, but otherwise there's nothing new, different or inspiring here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping feedback coming in, 18 Feb 2010

This is a well-written, deeply sensible look at how to live a life less wasteful and importantly, it is associated with a blog through which Piper Terrett gains important insights into ordinary people's concerns: what disturbs them about our waste of resources and helpful hints about how savings can be made which bring about changes to make families healthier as well as wealthier. This kind of blog - for which Piper Terrett was awarded "Green Voice" of the UK for 2010 - helps to create a community of people who share an ethos badly needed for the future. This book pulls all of those insights together and no doubt will be regularly updated. The previous reviewer, in a most unfortunate position having lost his job should join the associated blogging community and put his particular worries forward. There will be all sorts of help forthcoming, and possibly more tailored to his needs, and where he lives. No use looking for rabbits, if you live in a totally urban environment! Rabbits kept many families fed in the South East during the Second World War, and we have to presume that when rationing and deprivation started to take hold, many people learned how to skin one pretty fast!
