This review is from: Autodrome: The Lost Race Circuits of Europe (Hardcover)
Nine of Europe's greatest lost racetracks; AVUS, Masaykring, Nurburgring Sudschleife, Brooklands, Crystal Palace, Keimola, Montlhery, Monza and Reims are both remembered in their prime, and revisited today as crumbling temples of speed.
Featuring glorious period images and the breathtaking contemporary photography of Gavin D. Ireland, this is one of the most atmospheric books I have ever read. From ghostly encounters between long dead speed aces and local youths on the moss covered banking at Brooklands, to the derelict sixties architecture of Finnish track Keimola, now engulfed by pine forests and all but forgotten.
Also featured are haunting images of Nazi officers marvelling at the streamlined Auto Union of Bernd Rosemeyer screaming around the sweeping brickwork banking at AVUS in Berlin, and of the tranquil park that London's own racetrack at Crystal Palace was destined to become.
If you love entertaining and informative motor racing history together with beautiful photography you will love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painfully fascinating, 16 Jun 2009

This review is from: Autodrome: The Lost Race Circuits of Europe (Hardcover)
It is a really fascinating book, but sometimes in the painful way.
Seeing those wonderful racing premises left to rot in the middle of nowhere is both exchiting and very sad.
The pages contain many pictures of the days when the circuits were used for real racing, and the pictures taken in the places nowaday, as well as some story hints about the races held in the tracks.
We can observe how old building are still there, few meters away from countryroads, parking lots, apartmente buildings or downtown cities, like for the Avusring in Berlin or the Crystal Palace in London.
Many of modern pictures will perfectly give the sense of places forgotten by all but few fortunate who still keep the memory of the places.
For example, I live few kilometers away from the Circuito d'alta velocità in Monza, but I didn't visit the place yet, I just saw it in this book.

It is both a racing history text and a proper photographic book, because the pictures contained in it are ones of a real quality.

To make a long story short, it is an absolute "must have" for the nostalgic petrolhead. Or for the nostalgic - full stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Photographer is Amazing, 17 Feb 2005

I've had the privilege of seeing some of Mr. Irelands work and it is, quite simply, stunning. His photos are evocative and striking and sometimes hauntingly simple- if the photos used for this book are even remotely as good as what he's produced already, then this is going to be a treasure worth waiting for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Motor Racing Circuits, 18 Jan 2011

This review is from: Autodrome: The Lost Race Circuits of Europe (Hardcover)
Very informative reference of time gone by Motor Racing Circuits that have been abandoned and some lost to motorsport. Some excellent write ups and photograpic images of so many of Europes lost race tracks.

As a result of this book it stimulated a number of visits the these atmospheric and historical motorsport venues. Many still quietly decaying although some are now being painted and moderately maintained ie 'Reims GP Circuit' with a revival meeting during 2009. There are many more abandoned circuits that could possibly contibute to a further book if so desired ie Solitude near Stuttgart where a bi-annual revival takes place. This has stimulated interest from Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes with cars being drawn from there own Heritage Collections and guest drivers including Sir Stirling Moss/Hans Hermann/David Piper etc.

During the summer of 2011 the Solitude Revival are putting on a two day race meeting using most of the FULL 12.7 Km circuit of the old 19650's/60'sSolitude race track. This should be of interest to any motorsport enthusiast. Good read with interesting photographs.
