4.0 out of 5 stars The Orkney & Shetland "Angle"?, 7 Jan. 2008

This review is from: Early English Settlement of Orkney and Shetland, The (Paperback)
Wainright posed the question "Who were the Picts?"
In what I found to be a facinating, absorbing and well structured book Davis sets out to show that Angles / Saxons were present in Orkney & Shetland as a part of the mix of the settled population well before they settled in SE England.
He starts with ancient historical writings (which state the above) and proceeds with clear analysis of language, literature and transcribed verse to substantiate these writings which historians in recent centuries have chosen to dismiss.
Davis has added to our understanding of the shadowy Pictish era in Orkney & Shetland prior to Norse settlement.
