This book has chapters on the boat (covering different types of boat, size of boat, rig, safety , stowage, self steering), the skipper (skills practical and theorectical , Casting off, Sail Handling, Heavy Weather, Berthing, Passage Planning, Sleep Mgt and Watch Keeping. It is full of valuable information and all of it is relevant to anyone who ventures out in a yacht. Sadly the title may put off many who would find the book very useful. Why did I not give it 5 stars you may ask? I felt the berthing and casting off chapters left out many techniques that couples ( ie crew and skipper) use - which you never learn on sailing courses. All the berthing techniques were just the standard ones that you use when you have lots of crew and are taught on sailing courses. It just felt like a big hole. But other than that it is a good practical reference book.

This book has a lot of the usual 'stuff' but some aspects, particularly on fatigue, were of real interest and worth thinking about in relation to single handed sailing. Worth buying for the little 'gems' here and there as well.

Very complete treatise on shorthanded manoeuvers for the average sailor (and low powered motor boat owner too). Lots of interesting tips and tricks.

1 Heavy on management speak and philosophy.
2 Very few original ideas. As a single hander with a couple of years experience only found 4.
3 Explanation of techniques could be clearer.

Average introducton to sailing. Nothing special.

Some good material in this book. Worth reading before setting sail even with a full crew.

A clear and concise look at the issues arising when the skipper is the only one aboard or sailing with inexperienced or untrained crew. As a boat owner preparing to take members of the family sailing, this book makes it abundantly clear that even if the skipper is the best sailor in the world, things can quickly get difficult if the situation is underestimated. My crew and I will be safer for reading this book.
