2.0 out of 5 stars Little new
1 Heavy on management speak and philosophy.
2 Very few original ideas. As a single hander with a couple of years experience only found 4.
3 Explanation of techniques could be clearer.

Average introducton to sailing. Nothing special.

This review is from: Shorthanded Sailing: Singlehanded or Short of Crew (Paperback)
This book has chapters on the boat (covering different types of boat, size of boat, rig, safety , stowage, self steering), the skipper (skills practical and theorectical , Casting off, Sail Handling, Heavy Weather, Berthing, Passage Planning, Sleep Mgt and Watch Keeping. It is full of valuable information and all of it is relevant to anyone who ventures out in a yacht. Sadly the title may put off many who would find the book very useful. Why did I not give it 5 stars you may ask? I felt the berthing and casting off chapters left out many techniques that couples ( ie crew and skipper) use - which you never learn on sailing courses. All the berthing techniques were just the standard ones that you use when you have lots of crew and are taught on sailing courses. It just felt like a big hole. But other than that it is a good practical reference book.

Very complete treatise on shorthanded manoeuvers for the average sailor (and low powered motor boat owner too). Lots of interesting tips and tricks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thought provoking and empowering, 10 April 2014

A clear and concise look at the issues arising when the skipper is the only one aboard or sailing with inexperienced or untrained crew. As a boat owner preparing to take members of the family sailing, this book makes it abundantly clear that even if the skipper is the best sailor in the world, things can quickly get difficult if the situation is underestimated. My crew and I will be safer for reading this book.

This book has a lot of the usual 'stuff' but some aspects, particularly on fatigue, were of real interest and worth thinking about in relation to single handed sailing. Worth buying for the little 'gems' here and there as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but flawed, 24 Feb 2011

Lots of practical advice.
Clearly based in experience and trial and error.
Excellent sections on berthing, watches and planning.
Riddled with errors. Many could be typos but some are worse than that. For example two boat photographs are captioned as "sloops" when they are clearly not.
The author assumes the reader will understand a great deal of sailing jargon. They should if they're planning to sail single-handed but it doesn't make for an easy read.
Slim volume that is worthwhile.
