5.0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING!
Claudia Fitzherbert has done a great job off describing Emily Davison, a famous (But not the most famous) Suffragette.
THe book begins by explaining Emilys childhood:- her passion for literature and history, her brother who was sent to Canada and many more interesting facts about her. It then progresses to when she first discovered the Pankhursts and their campaign,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Getting to know Emily Davison
'Who was...Emily Davison?' is a clearly written introduction for those who have not come across her sad tale before. There is some background to the suffragette movement and an outline of Emily Davison's life and thoughts. What it omits is the really interesting debate about Emily's mental state. 'Who was...Emily Davison?' is a clearly written introduction for those who have not come across her sad tale before. There is some background to the suffragette movement and an outline of Emily Davison's life and thoughts. What it omits is the really interesting debate about Emily's mental state. Her physical sufferings are well documented but what these did to her mentally are either glossed over or omitted. Whilst this book is meant to be an introduction for young readers (it claims to tie in with the key-stage 2 curriculum for primary schools) it shows a lack of conviction by not facing up to the psychological problems that Emily faced. It is a possibility that she had such problems well before she joined the Cause and certainly imprisonment, hunger strikes and force feeding seem to have provided a fertile place for any underlying problems to have developed or for new problems to have germinated. The consequence of this is that we are no further along the trail when it come to deciding whether her final act was suicide or not. A pity because in all other respects this is an enjoyable and informative account.

Claudia Fitzherbert has done a great job off describing Emily Davison, a famous (But not the most famous) Suffragette.
THe book begins by explaining Emilys childhood:- her passion for literature and history, her brother who was sent to Canada and many more interesting facts about her. It then progresses to when she first discovered the Pankhursts and their campaign, VOTES FOR WOMEN. Claudia describes vividly Emilys growing passion for VOTES FOR WOMEN, and the things she did for the cause, from throwing a brick through a window at the houses of Parlment to beening force fed and having the hosepipe on her in prison. It finishes dramatically with Emilys most dramatic action for the cause on the racetrack where she was killed.

I found this book very interesting and useful, giving me not just imformation about Emily Davison, but also the suffragette movement that gave women the right to vote. Very well written. An Excellent, easy, short read.

a very interesting account with some uncanny resemblances to family. I wonder how well researched it is or has the author drawn from family and friends memory?

Easy to read and interesting introduction to life of Emily Davison and her role in the Suffragettes. Written in the style of a novel. Reasonably informative but other sources recommended if a more detailed account required. I enjoyed reading the book which only took a few hours.

Emily Davison is vividly brought to life in this charming and witty account by Claudia Fitzherbert, who reviews regularly for the Daily Telegraph. The book was short-listed for the Blue Peter Book awards.
