This is a delightful book by arguably the UK's leading fish artist.

The chapters are divided by species with the artist/author's thoughts on each fish together with an insight into how he creates the visual image for his painting.

The paintings in the book are simply beautiful with the artist displaying a very rare talent when capturing underwater lighting.

If you are a fisherman this is an essential read and the sort of book you can sit with in front of a fire after a freezing day down the river. If you are not a fisherman but simply love beautifully illustrated books on wildlife then this is also for you.

I would thoroughly recommend it as a book you will keep going back to.

This review is from: Beneath the Surface (Wildlife Art Series) (Hardcover)
I am not a fisherman - I bought this because of one painting, 'the food chain' of pike - because it resonates with a dream I have. Never mind all that, this is a beautiful book, with paintings of sixteen species (plus a few of 'others') varying from coarse fish like perch, pike and chub to game fish (trout, grayling, salmon) and a few sea fish (bass, mullet). The paintings are full page or reproduced over two pages, with explanatory text by Miller himself. Nice text, too, enjoyable and informative even for a layman like me!
Miller started off as an angler but now gets most of his information from diving with the fish. Included are sets of sketches for the paintings and even a glossary, for those of us who don't know what a Kusaamo Professor or a pinkie might be...
But the meat of the book is the artwork, and I think it is gorgeous and evocative, and very convincing (and that includes the background and the plants). A beautiful book. I wish he would paint the Arapaima...
