To the point,
By Fetska (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Game: How The City Really Works (Paperback)
I don't work in the city, I never have done, and I doubt I ever will. But I love this book. I imagine it will appeal to hungry job applicants feverishly plotting their rise up the city ladder, those stuck on the ladder wondering why they're not moving up, or those at the top smugly looking down, annoyed someone is giving away all their tricks. 'The Game' is utterly believable and real, stripping away the mystique and revealing the city as one big poker game of bluff and chance. Its strongest point is that this book is blessed with the wry detachment and witty observations of someone who has played the game and perhaps decided he would rather write a book instead. Interesting, funny, and if you like this game, probably useful.

One of the best city books around,

The Game is well written with amusing anecdotes and bags of information. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the city. Its ideal as a holiday read or whilst on the tube heading to the domain of the game.

I highly recommend this book, particularly to anyone thinking about a career in finance & is unsure about what really goes on in the banking world. It is very readable, brilliantly well-written and full of amusing anecdotes.

A witty and insightful expose of the City; highly informative and fun. For anybody considering a career in banking, this is required reading. For businessmen looking to understand the basics about raising capital through public markets, as well as riding the roller coaster having gone public, this book is also a must. All in all, a waspish look at the City playpen, explaining the conniving, brown nosing, back stabbing and snobbery that goes on - also highly relevant to any organisation.

This book is an epiphany,
This review is from: The Game: How The City Really Works (Paperback)
I'm at uni and wanted to find out more about the City so I bought some of the older, mouldier publications at my local Waterstone's. They were so turgid I gave up within days and returned to the book store where I saw a lovely pink copy of 'The Game' that had just arrived on the shelves. Enticing and relevant, is how it looked to me - and I was right! This book blasts away all that silly City nomenclature and elucidates very clearly the more abstruse terms: by the end of my reading it, for example, I'd discovered a hedge fund manager is just a fancy term for someone who sits in front of a screen from 8am til 430pm, Monday to Friday, buying a share and then selling it again, ususally a few days' later. Buy this book and absorb it, and you will know more about the City than the person interviewing you (however big the firm you are applying for) - and your resulting confidence will get you the job: it worked for me!

I got this book because I'm working in the city and was curious to see or learn more about it. I would give it 3.5 stars. Overall it's good to see how everyone is working, what they're doing etc.... But some part are quite long to read and could have been much shorter.Well thanks to it I know which jobs I don't wanna get! |
