5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading and excellent, if not complete reference book for researching history., 11 Feb. 2013

This review is from: 619: The History of a Forgotten Squadron: The Activities of No.619 Squadron RAF During World War 2 (Paperback)
Whilst researching family history I recently discovered the whereabouts of my late father-in-law's log books. He was a Flt. Sgt. Wireless Operator/Air Gunner who served in the 619 Squadron, flying a total of 28 Ops. between Nov. 43 & May 44, before surviving the war. I was very keen to discover as much as possible about this period and ordered this book hoping it would help with my research.
I was not disappointed and found it to be invaluable, with detailed tables of all operations carried out by 619 Sq. together with a lot of useful background information. My only slight disappointment was that listings of Captains and crews were limited to pilot captains only in the interests of brevity. It would have been useful to have been able to identify names of full crews.
The personalised stories provide a fascinating insight into the horrors involved and makes you realise what these, mostly young men, went through. My father-in-law was still only 23 at the time of his last op. and it seems that survival depended on a combination of skill and courage, but mostly luck. We all owe a great deal of thanks to all who were involved, especially those who were lost.

The book is for my husband who did 32 ops with 619. He is enjoying looking at it and so are his 7 children and 16 grand children to say nothing of his wife. Many thanks for the quick delivery.

I bought this book for my mother-in-law who served with this squadron during the war, transporting bombs to the Lancasters. She was over the moon with the details in this book. She has read the book avidly and is providing us with the details she found out, such as how much the bombs weighed that she transported, what happened to some of the crew she knew etc. This book has given her a lot of enjoyment.
