5.0 out of 5 stars A book for the birds (and people), 23 Jan. 2011
This review is from: Rinko Kawauchi: Murmuration (Hardcover)
Rinko Kawauchi is one of Japan's up and coming photographers, and a number of her photo-books have quickly become highly sought after collector's books. Published in an addition of 1000, this book (like the fine contributions of Stephen Gill and Alec and Carmen Soth) emerged from this year's Brighton Photo-Biennial. People who live in those areas of the UK where one finds murmurations of starlings often don't share the sense of wonder that these provoke when you see them for the first time-- this book renews some of that sense of awe. The beautiful choreography of the birds off the Brighton Pier is captured wonderfully, and Kawauchi manages to subtly shift the focus from the birds to the murmuration of people wandering about Brighton. Is the coordinated acrobatics about of the sturnus vulgaris really so much more mysterious than the pavement dances of the homo sapiens?
