This review is from: To Make the People Smile Again: A Memoir of the Spanish Civil War (Paperback)
George Wheeler brings to life his ideals and reflections and the stark realities of the bloody years of the Spanish Civil War. Had George's concern for human value and deceny, and his determination to stop those powers from imposing their will on the elected goverment of Spain, been reflected by the 'non-interventionist' governments Fascism may well have been opposed on the Spanish battlefields and future wars averted.
Written from first hand experience it is very appropriate to our times when the growth of Fasciscm is on the ascendent. We ignore history at our peril. Read the book and remember George and all the others of many nations who belived that freedom is the birthright of us all.

4.0 out of 5 stars to make the people smile again, 18 Nov 2003
This review is from: To Make the People Smile Again: A Memoir of the Spanish Civil War (Paperback)
a good view of the fighting and later imprisonment in franco,s
jails by a soldier on the ground who wasn,t a leftie intellectual,
but an ordinary worker who believed his cause was right.
in spite of evidence to the contary he still blames non intervention for the republic,s defeat.
having to constantly to refer to the notes is a minus to reading a good memoir.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: To Make the People Smile Again: A Memoir of the Spanish Civil War (Paperback)
Great book, easy to read but informative, impartial (mostly) and gripping. Its not a book to read if you want to go to sleep.
Fascinating (and I've read a lot on this topic), and presented in a refreshing, down to earth manner.
Recommended.
