This is an inspirational book which very quickly begins to generate ideas for stories in the reader's head.
The style is not always easy to read because it draws on so many traditions and is anecdotal, but perseverance pays.
It has many useful tips for creating the right conditions for storytelling, or for finding a key that will unlock stories, be it a toy or object from the natural world.
There is an excellent section on seasonal storytelling and being inspired by the moon. Also tips on fairy tales and fantasy are given alongside dealing with moral and developmental issues.
The book is a gradual revelation of the many ways that lead to storytelling and the benefits that come from communication between adults and children.
Nancy Mellon takes a holistic approach to her subject which, it gradually dawns, is what is most necessary for storytelling.
