Mrs. K. A. Wheatley "katywheatley" (Leicester, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mrs Cockle's Cat (Paperback)
This is a wonderful short book by Philippa Pearce, more famous for her book Tom's Midnight Garden. This is a much slighter story and can easily be read to a child in about twenty minutes. It is wonderfully illustrated by Anthony Maitland and would make a great first reader for those children who are done with basic picture books but not yet ready to move up to a full blown book, book.

The story tells of Mrs. Cockle, an old lady who lives in London and sells balloons. She makes just enough money to keep herself and her cat, Peter, in comfort. Peter is the love of Mrs. Cockle's life. He is very spoiled and his greatest passion is fresh fish. In this story the fresh fish supply dries up thanks to the weather and Peter runs away to find some more. Mrs Cockle is so distressed that she quite literally wastes away with sorrow.

One one particularly blustery day she is so thin that she gets whisked into the air with her balloons and goes on an amazing, cloud filled adventure with a surprisingly happy ending.

Simple, amusing and gentle, this is a lovely story and all my children, 3, 6 and 10 were rivetted by it.

This edition also contains a wonderful, although brief introduction to the story by the excellent writer Frank Cottrell Boyce and it is his glowing recommendation that made me buy it for my own children. Lovely.

A. Firbank - See all my reviews
Took ages to track this down, but good old Amazon had it! As a kid this story was told to me, one of my favourites, so now I can pass on the story to my children. One to enjoy.
