5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent round up of the Beat scene, 2 April 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Beat Generation (Pocket essentials: Literature) (Paperback)
I haven't read any of these Pocket Essentials books before, but I picked up this one after Time Out magazine rated it as paperback of the week.
It's an excellent round up of everything that made the Beats truly great - with chapters on Burroughs, Kerouac and Ginsberg as well as detailed entries for all of the movers, shakers and hangers-on who kept up with them (DiPrima, Huncke, Corso etc etc etc). There's also a really good chapter on beat movies and a fascinating introduction which talks about the links between the Beats and the subcultures like juvenile delinquents of the time.
Even if you think you know everything about the angel headed hipsters, there'll be something here to interest you!
