5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Photography, 8 July 2009
This review is from: Wanderings with a Camera in Scotland: The Photography of Erskine Beveridge (Hardcover)
For anyone with an interest in landscape photography or Scottish history this book is a fascinating collection. Beveridge had a fine eye for composition and the resulting photos have been reproduced beautifully here. From the villages of Fife to the Western Isles and the north coast here are scenes of Scotland more memorable than those we now see in our ubiquitous modern calendars and posters.

First came across some of Beveridge's snaps taken circa 1912 of a sailing version of a pre-puffer, called a gabbart, lying on the sands of the dried out loch opposite our cottage home. These old flat-bottomed vessels used to bring coal to our area in the past and leave with disease free seed potatoes which were highly valued in other parts of the Country. The quality of the photos I came across on the internet was amazing and it encouraged me to buy this beautiful collection of Scottish scenes by a real past Master of the Art. I have to admit that I have not been disappointed. The collection is charming, educational, and highly informative.

I read an illustrated article about this book in a local newspaper and so bought it. It did not disappoint. The images are of a high quality and of particular interest to people who know Scotland and are interested in the way it has changed since the early 20th century. It features images form both east and west Scotland.

Congratulations to RCAHMS for publishing this outstanding collection. A snapshot in time but no collection of snapshops. A collection of carefully considered and finely composed images of Scotland's landscape which capture the social and economic conditions of the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very Skilful Photographer, 20 Dec 2012

This review is from: Wanderings with a Camera in Scotland: The Photography of Erskine Beveridge (Hardcover)
I chose the book following a photographic trip to North Uist, including Vallay, the home of the author, as I wanted to view those landscapes and working methods as well as similar in other parts of Scotland.
I liked the fact that the author's life history was outlined and having looked at the images I felt that he was a man who realised that ways of life should be recorded for posterity as they will eventually disappear, also true of today.
I would have liked to know a little about his equipment and methods, but that does not spoil the enjoyment of the book.
This book could be recommended to all who appreciate good landscape photography, as well as anyone wanting a look at a past way of life.

Potentially interesting collections of old photographs are often spoiled by poor reproduction. This excellent selection gives sharp images with good tone gradation. A pleasure to browse through as well as giving remarkably evocative individual scenes.
