5.0 out of 5 stars A simply fantastic book, and a wonderful read!!
This book is a must for any dedicated fan of 80's F1 racing.

I grew up with F1 during this 1980's, and the collection of talent during this era was outstanding. Elio De Angelis was one of the top drivers of the decade, and whilst never breaking into the all-time greats, certainly was one of the fastest and most naturally gifted.

Over the years, the...

3.0 out of 5 stars A labour of love (but not of literature)
You have to be a genuine motor racing enthusiast to spend a large chunk of your life compiling the biography of someone who won just two Grand Prix races (both of them gifted to him by multiple retirements or disqualifications by faster drivers ahead of him) and who lost his life 25 years ago in a rather grisly testing crash. However, Elio de Angelis appears to have been...

This review is from: Remembering Elio: The Life of Italian Driver Elio De Angelis (Hardcover)

Over the years, the legend of De Angelis the man has grown and now some 20 years after his tragic and needless death a book has done justice to the last true gentleman racer whose values and manners were from another age.

If you are expecting a bland paperback book in the traditional style, then you will be disappointed.

This book is a wonderful blend. Presented in a large picture-book style, superb photographs (some from the De Angelis family collection), recollections from close friends and colleagues, a chronological timeline of Elio's career and nostalgic snippets of memorabillia from the decade all add up to a book that is a sheer delight to read.

The layout and artwork of the book is simply superb, and the author has certainly done her homework on the subject.

This is a superb tribute to a driver so often referenced in other books as no more than a support act during the 1980's.

'Remembering Elio' is a fantastic tribute to a much missed sporting hero.

This review is from: Remembering Elio: The Life of Italian Driver Elio De Angelis (Hardcover)
However, Elio de Angelis appears to have been a genuinely charming bloke whose driving talents belied the family wealth that allowed him to go racing in the first place, and this book is the result of Lorie Coffey's obsession with his memory.

Ms Coffey readily admits that she had some assistance in the project from the de Angelis family, although the result of this appears to have been unlimited access to the family photo album and some boringly anodyne reminiscences. If you're looking for character assessment or a sober analysis of the late ace's strengths and weaknesses as a driver or a human being, you won't find much to detain you here.

What this book was crying out for was an experienced editor with a passing knowledge of F1. Not only is it about four times too long but the writing is amateurish (that's being kind) and the text is irritatingly peppered with exclamation marks. The third star I've awarded it was for the author's effort, not her literary talent. Buy the book if you, too, are obsessed with Elio de Angelis, but if you are merely interested in the man and his career, you'll find everything you need in a half-hour meander around cyber-space.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book an not before time!, 8 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Remembering Elio: The Life of Italian Driver Elio De Angelis (Hardcover)
When I first got this book my first thought was OMG so glossy and neat where do I put it! Lovely quality book.

Finally a book about Elio de Angelis the man and the racer. I loved learning about his family and early life, lots of the anecdotes made me smile. Nice to find out about the things you don't read in Autosport of see on the track. That said the racing to was well covered and the cars pictured with their specification details and full racing statistics for all of Elio's races. One reviewer says you need to be obsessed with Elio to read this book, perhaps, but surely that is true of any book about one driver only. The title says it 'Remembering Elio' not assessing the racing in the early 80's there are plenty of books out there which cover that. This is about Elio and for anyone who was captivated by his unique personality on and off the track it is a must read.

Quite frankly I had forgotten Elio until I saw this book advertised. It arrived via Amazon in three days. Now I feel I know a lot more about this racing driver and his life. The book is well produced and well illustrated and decent value compared to some other books on the same theme--racing drivers.

It's rare to find anything about Elio's life and adventure in F1. This book is a wonderful homage to the man first and the driver. Unseen pictures and a jewel to get hold of, highly recommended.
