4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book on the Soviet fighter aces of WW2, 1 Mar 2001

This review is from: Stalin's Falcons: Aces of the Red Star - Tribute to the Notable Fighter Pilots of the Soviet Air Forces, 1918-53 (Hardcover)
Polak and Shores have added a much needed "gem" to Grub Streets excellent family of books about fighter aces of both the second and first world wars. The prime purpose of this book is to detail all the soviet aces in the wars fought by the Soviet Union - including the war with Finland, Japan, Patriotic War (1941 to 1945) and the war over Korea.
Some excellent detail and reference information as well as some good photographs. The reader gets a real sense of the contribution the Soviet aces made to the final victory over the luftwaffe - which has been overlooked for far too long. The details in regard to Soviet aces over Korea is also particularly interesting - revealing how this air struggle was not as one sided as first thought..
My only crtiticism is that there is not enough general history or anaysis of the air wars the Ssoviets fought. More to do with units, structures of commmand etc. But this is only a minor crtiticism.
Overall this is an invaluable adttion to anyone interested in air warfare in the second world war.
