4.0 out of 5 stars Written by James!, 14 April 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Companion Guide to Kent and Sussex (ne) (Companion Guides) (Paperback)
The content is certainly thorough, as even the smallest of villages are given a review. It is also incredibly accurate, and it seems to be largely unbiased to either one of the counties. However, many would feel that the author concentrates too much on the history of noble families and stately homes, rather than the more obvious charms of the towns and villages reviewed. If you skip these overlong (and not too frequent) sections you'll find it a very interesting guide to this corner of England, probably the best available. For those who may have wondered, the castle on the front cover is Scotney Castle in Kent.
I give the book 4/5 because it is well composed overall and interesting to read, the one fault being that few would find it outstandingly thrilling, simply because of the nature of the book (being just a place guide), and also because of the lack of pictures.

This is a comprehensive guide to the area. For some it may appear heavy on text, but if you wish to be well informed then this is the guide to go for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read, 31 Oct. 2012
This review is from: The Companion Guide to Kent and Sussex (ne) (Companion Guides) (Paperback)
An excellent book with a rich range of information - geographic, historic, architectural and gastronomic. I particularly like the sequence in each chapter which facilitates a tour through the places described.
