A little disappointing
on 19 April 2013
Having read the reviews I was very disappointed with the book. Being a design professional I was expecting, and hoping for, sound design advice for using this methodology, unfortunately there is very little, there is much talk, and an awful lot of repetition. I don't know how many times the writer states that straw bale building is fun as it is carried out with a team of friends, a statement that hold no value what soever, as this would apply to any self build being carried out by a team of friends and many professional building sites can be fun. Such commentary is irritating and rather patronising. The auther makes statements such as - cavity wall construction is bad, without any form of substantiation, cavity wall construction is a well proven and has numerous benefits over straw bale, but as will all methodologies it has its limitations (hence there being so many). This lack of objectivity unfortunately undermines the whole book.
I have been fascinated by straw bale construction since my first introduction in the late 1970's and love to see it reaching the mainstream construction process, where appropriate. I was hoping this book would help to inspire me to adopt this approach, unfortunately this is not the one.
An objective, factual, professional book would help to bring straw bale construction into the mainstream, is there one out there?
