1.0 out of 5 stars TEXT BOOK
The first thing that struck me about this book was its resemblance to a school text book, its A4 layout and illustrations giving it an unusual style
The story itself never really got off the ground because as soon as the author gets into the action he is frostbitten and spends the rest of the battle unable to fight ,he therefore relies on his comrades accounts of...

This review is from: Iron Horsemen: The Memoirs of Obergefreiter Ernst Panse, 24 Panzer Division, Stalingrad, 1942-1943 (Paperback)
If you are looking for lots of blood and guts heroics then this is not the book for you.

If you want to read a realistic account of what life is like on the front line in wartime then this is for you.

There are periods of boredom and the mundane day to day life as a soldier which does not attract attention of the media.

This is the recollection of an ordinary man in an out of the ordinary environment.

So for a realistic portrayal of combat and life in the german military I would recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars TEXT BOOK, 28 Oct. 2005

This review is from: Iron Horsemen: The Memoirs of Obergefreiter Ernst Panse, 24 Panzer Division, Stalingrad, 1942-1943 (Paperback)
The first thing that struck me about this book was its resemblance to a school text book, its A4 layout and illustrations giving it an unusual style
The story itself never really got off the ground because as soon as the author gets into the action he is frostbitten and spends the rest of the battle unable to fight ,he therefore relies on his comrades accounts of the action to tell his tale. This gives the story a somewhat `second hand` feel and reduces the impact.
The climax of the book including capture, imprisonment and the infamous deathmarch is so brief and inconclusive it may as well not be included at all.
To sum the book up i would say very dissapointing and not one i would recommend buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real life account AND FREE CD, 26 April 2012
This review is from: Iron Horsemen: The Memoirs of Obergefreiter Ernst Panse, 24 Panzer Division, Stalingrad, 1942-1943 (Paperback)
This is a real life account of on mans experience of the horror of the Eastern Front.

No its not full of blood, guts and unbelievable heroics, its about an ordinary soldier caught up in the greatest conflagration in history.

He gives an accurate account of what it was like to be a run of the mill grunt with all the problems that ensues.

The mail in voucher for a FREE Panzer music CD , although I had to pay for postage, proved great value as it effectively knocked 50% of the price of the book and I've not been bombarded with junk mail.
