5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful resource for teachers
Teachers set tasks for pupils in the hope that doing the tasks results in learning about a mathematical topic. This text identifies the features needed by tasks to enable them to support effective learning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough for a Mason's book
Firstly i should point out that i agree with the two afore mentioned reviews. My 3star critique doesn't mean its a bad book. its a good guide book for teachers, easily read and accesible (not to mention it has a fair price). Nevertheless, Mason has co-authored "thinking mathematically" and "mathematics as a constructive activity" so if these are five star books, this is...

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful resource for teachers, 2 July 2011
This review is from: Designing and Using Mathematical Tasks (Paperback)
Teachers set tasks for pupils in the hope that doing the tasks results in learning about a mathematical topic. This text identifies the features needed by tasks to enable them to support effective learning.

A central notion of Developing and Using Mathematical Tasks is that of the 'structure of a topic'. This provides a framework within which mathematical 'powers', 'themes' and 'pedagogy' can inform task design. The book provides great depth and coherence to the provision of learning activity.

However it is not a book for beginners in their PGCE: for prior acquaintance with its concepts I'd recommend first working at the text Developing Thinking in Algebra and/or Developing Thinking in Geometry. Both are also by Mason & Johnston-Wilder.

I doubt whether Developing and Using Mathematical Tasks would appeal to those who believe that providing a brief explanation, a couple of examples on the whiteboard, then 20 questions from a textbook has much to do with effective mathematics teaching.

This review is from: Designing and Using Mathematical Tasks (Paperback)
It is a book which approaches mathematics on a pedagogical point of view. It is ideal for teachers more than for students of the subject unless they study a specific degree on the learning of Mathematics like the OU Degree course in Mathematics and its Learning (B46).
