4.0 out of 5 stars a different slant, 12 Aug. 2011
This review is from: The Cattle Truck (Paperback)
Many books about the holocaust centre on the experience of the camps but by recording his thoughts, feelings and experiences, present and past, during his harrowing journey, Jorge Semprum presents us with an intricate, evocative and thought provoking account of what it means to be caught up in the terrifying machinery of national socialism. How it affects one personally and psychologically, and what philosophical issues it forces one to reflect on. It is a multi layered book which needs to be read more than once to take in all the nuances of Jorge's experiences: a book to go back to in order to understand fully what this experience is telling us, positively and negatively about the capbilities of humankind.

Very interesting book, you have to get used to travelling from now back to the past, but it is understandable. For someone to survive on a throw of the dice is quite unsettling to read about but that was the way things were in those days, it was a game of chance.
