5.0 out of 5 stars Timely stories, 31 Dec 2009

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Strange Itineraries (Paperback)
This a series of short stories by Tim Powers, some of which are co-authored by James Blaylock.
The themes are varied, but the the majority of the protagonists are ordinary people caught up in extra-ordinary situations, a theme he explores in longer works such as "The Stress of her Regard".
There are no clearly defined genre distinction between horror/fantasy, as in the story "Pat Moore", more a blurring of images to give a satisfying subtle whole.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This consists of the following short stories

In Which Corner of the Compass is Ago
Itinerary
The Way down the Hill
Pat Moore
Fifty Cents
Through and Through
We Traverse Afar
Where they are Hid
The Better Boy
Night Moves

These are the first short stories by Tim Power(three are co-written by James P Blaylock) that I have read so I don't know if they are included in any other collections.

There was a huge amount of invention in virtually all of these stories. Some of them like "The Way Down the Hill" I really wished had been extended into a full novel. Virtually all of them work well as short stories and tell a complete story.

Occasionally it did take me a while to work out what was going on but by the end of each one I could generally figure it out.

They are all well written and Powers really does have a great fluent style of writing.
