5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice - well graded and very comprehensive, 21 Feb 2006
This review is from: The Acoustic Guitar Method - Complete Edition: Learn to Play Using the Techniques & Songs of American Roots Music (Acoustic Guitar (String Letter) & Access to free downloads included) (Paperback)
This book is really a compilation of three separate books into one volume.

Unlike many self-help guitar tutors, this one does not race ahead too quickly. I've just submitted a review for a book that does exactly that ..... teach a few rhythms or chords and suddenly race ahead towards much more complex levels. That fault is NOT evident with this volume.

One key to its success - and, for some people, maybe a slight disadvantage - is that each new section and element is based upon mostly well-known American folk music. If you are more interested in modern music, then maybe this isn't the book for you - but I'd suggest that you still give it a chance. The grading of each chapter and each stage within each chapter is well developed and supportive for beginners. The fact that THREE CD's are included (one for each of the books that are now compiled into this volume), makes this an exceptional example of good value for money.

If you want an insight into the book's structure, these are the chapter themes. Naturally, each of the three CD's begins with a tune-up section. Most chapters in each book use a different folk tune and I'll list a few of those at the end of each summary. Tunes are generally performed as songs the end of each chapter.
----------------------------------------------------------------
BOOK ONE (14 chapters - emphasis upon rhythms and flat-picking)
First chords, first song (chords are D and A)
New chord, new strum (chord E)
TAB basics and your first melody
Reading notes
The G chord
The C chord
More single notes (usefully uses the same tune as for the earlier chapter 'Reading notes')
Country backup basics
Seventh chords
Waltz time
Half notes and rests
Minor chords
Minor-key melody
The B7 chord
(Tune examples: Careless love, East Virginia Blues, In the pines, Scarborough Fair)
----------------------------------------------------------------
BOOK TWO (11 chapters - emphasis upon fingerpicking)
The alternating bass
Blues in E
Major scales and melodies
Starting to fingerpick
More picking patterns
The G Major scale
Bass runs
More bass runs (again - usefully uses the same tune as in the chapter 'Bass runs')
Blues basics
Alternating bass fingerpicking
Fingerpicking in 3/4
(Tune examples: Columbia Stockade blues, Shenandoah, I am a pilgrim, House of the Rising Sun)
----------------------------------------------------------------
BOOK THREE (10 chapters - more advanced fingerpicking and other techniques)
The swing feel
Tackling the F chord
More chord moves
Introducing Travis picking
Travis picking, continued
Hammer-ons
Slides and pull-offs
Alternate bass notes
The pinch
All together now
(Tune examples: Frankie and Johnny, Delia, Banks of the Ohio, New River Train)
----------------------------------------------------------------

As might by now be obvious, the emphasis of these books and chapters is upon a very slow and careful development of skills. If there is any real criticism it is that the use of melodic fingerpicking (as opposed to rhythmic accompaniment for a singer) is left until fairly late in the third book. But by then, the grounding in basic chords and both strumming and fingerpicking techniques is so thorough that you should have little difficulty in developing those skills if that's your main area of interest .... and there are several other books out there which you could now happily tackle once you've mastered the skills taught here.

Another criticism that some might make is that the actual number and range of chords used in the books is fairly low. In part this is the effect of basing the books upon a particular genre and style of music - but it also reflects the author's intention of focusing upon helping you to develop foundation skills rather than upon overwhelming you with sudden bursts of new or exotic chords. (A failure of so many self-help tutors).

A small but significant point is that EVERY example in the book always shows the appropriate musical notation, associated guitar TABulation, chord name and chord shape. Not all tutors do this. Some assume that you can remember everything. It is typical of this manual that the author lets you focus upon the playing and always gives you all the other information to support you.

So, despite a few minor flaws - and in my opinion they are minor - I heartily recommend this excellent value book for anyone who wants to learn to play the acoustic guitar. If your primary interest is wanting to play along to your own singing, it is even better value as that is the emphasis throughout.

This is definitely one of the best self-help acoustic guitar books that I have encountered.

As a recent beginner i have found that most of the books out there that promise you'll be the next hendrix within the week are lying.
Thankfully this book makes no such claims, the lessons are well structured and have a natural progression. This really was a huge pluss point for me, too many times i have been following the lessons within a book faithfully only to find that the next lesson assumes that you have prior knowledge. Not so as mentioned the lessons start off with a realistic approach, starting off with a single chord then moving on to how to change between chords.
As mentioned above the songs that are taught within the book are also much more interesting than the usual tunes found within beginners books.
All in all i am very pleased with this purchase and have no problems whatsoever recommending this book to anyone thinking about starting to play the guitar

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good learners or source material book., 4 Jun 2003
This review is from: The Acoustic Guitar Method - Complete Edition: Learn to Play Using the Techniques & Songs of American Roots Music (Acoustic Guitar (String Letter) & Access to free downloads included) (Paperback)
One of the problems with guitar tutor books is the material they try to get you playing. They teach you two chords and then get you to play "Sloop John B". The problem is that I don't know anyone who would even admit to being able to play "Sloop John B". It's discouraging. So this book is a great idea. It covers a good deal of material: starts you off with two chords and builds up to about 12 by the end of the first book; covers different strumming patterns; introduces bass-and-strum technique; some bass runs; some basic finger-picking techniques including travis and covers basic melody playing including things like hammer-ons and pull-offs. The material covered includes country, blues, bluegrass, swing and folk. So by the end of it, you should have a pretty good grounding. The text is clear, the examples take you through it in easy stages and none of it feels rushed. The CDs have all the examples on them played up to tempo and slowly. In some cases, the same song is covered more than once, the earlier version being simpified and the later one adding in some more complex flourishes or chords e.g. "I am a Pilgrim" with just major chords and then later with 7th chords and bass runs. If too much was repeated that could get boring but it works well here as a building process. But the best things of all is it doesn't have the "Sloop John B". Instead you get Stagolee, Alberta, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, The Banks of the Ohio, Omie Wise, House of the Rising Sun - tunes you might actually want to play. If you want to learn to play guitar this is a good start, especially of you like blues/country/roots music. Even if you can play a bit and want to improve your technique and add some good material to your repetiore then this is well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drop the teacher, buy this book!, 9 May 2011

This review is from: The Acoustic Guitar Method - Complete Edition: Learn to Play Using the Techniques & Songs of American Roots Music (Acoustic Guitar (String Letter) & Access to free downloads included) (Paperback)
Having used a couple of guitar tutors and a couple of learn guitar books and found progress slow, I was beginning to think I just wasn't cut out to play the guitar.
This book has changed all that. Only had it a week and already my chord changes are smooth and my strum pattern work is successful to the point that I have quickly picked up the songs in book one.
The cd's are superb as they let you know you are doing things right and are very unfussy, each example is played at full pace and slowly to let you know exactly how they should sound ( so don't worry if you don't know the songs, they re all on the cd's played by the tutor- and the book even tells you who sang each song and what album they are from).

Seriously, I can't rate this product highly enough. It explains everything clearly and is packed full of songs and techniques.
I have dropped my tutor, saving a tenner a week on lessons. Brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Acoustic Guitar Method - Complete Edition: Learn to Play Using the Techniques & Songs of American Roots Music (Acoustic Guitar (String Letter) & Access to free downloads included) (Paperback)
Original order was delayed due to the book being out of stock but well worth the wait. .The book is instructive both from a learning to play point of view but also from the history and origins of blue grass, american folk and country. it is well structured and the accompanying CD's run through each tune in real time and more slowly to enable you to pick up strum patterns etc.

Other reviews seem to criticise the book for including unfamiliar tunes but that misses the point if you are interested in blue grass and trad. American music and want to learn to play in that style.

This book will take you right through all the basics of acoustic guitar and set you up for more complex intermediate/advanced study. The other reviewers have covered this book in detail - I agree that one of the most important aspects of this book is the steady pace. You'll have to do a lot of practice to get through all this material and the book will emphasise good practice and steady learning. I alway tell students to play exercises and lines of music at least 50 times (not all on one day - but spread over a week) and this book will pretty much support that approach. Practice everything in the book 50 times and you will get to the end really understanding and playing well.

You might like to double this up with the Alfred Publishing books on acoustic - Complete Acoustic Guitar Method: Beginning Acoustic Guitar or Complete Fingerstyle Guitar Method: Beginning Fingerstyle Guitar (The Complete Fingerstyle Guitar Method: Beginning - Intermediate - Mastering) I've never had the 'Acoustic' book but I've often used the 'Fingerstyle' book. If you're into the flatpicking style, then you'll need some books or DVDs by Steve Kaufman or Russ Barenburg.

I came on the site to buy myself a new copy of this book. I lent the original to a friend and dont expect to see it again. Despite playing guitar for 2 and a half years, I enjoyed this book so much I want and need a copy to keep.

I have about 8 or 10 'beginners' books and all of them are poor compared to this logical, systematic, gently paced introduction to the accoustic guitar. This is the book I recommend and is the only one I persisted with. The traditional music in this book is definitely a good place to start building a solid technique....you can learn to play like John Hurt, Bukka White, Son House or Stevie Vai later! I feel strangely indebted to Hamburger, previously I didnt think I had any music in me, now I play guitar every day.

I am looking forward to revisiting some of the basic lessons Hamburger has prepared in this book.

This book was advertised at the time of my purchase as "Complete with 3 CD pack". It duly arrived minus the 3 CD pack. I notified Amazon who stated that they usually resolved such queries within 2 working days. In the meantime I had noticed that printed inside the book itself were instructions for a free Audio Download. I tried this and it was incorrect information and it didn't work. After 3 days I contacted Amazon again and got another 2 day promise, and then once more. After about 10 days I suggested to Amazon that perhaps 3 CD packs didn't exist any more, that the audio may have to be downloaded. I also pointed out that the instructions in the book didn't work. Amazon eventually agreed and gave me a link to the author. It wasn't the author's responsibility and he passed me on to the publisher, Acoustic Guitar. They promptly gave me a link for downloading the audio but it was limited to volume 1. After an exchange of emails I was sent the same link again (vol 1 only). Both these promptly sent links were based on their mistaken assumption that I had bought the product directly from them. I then had contact with a very helpful person and although I had to go over the whole history, yet again, he sorted it out and I eventually got the link for the audio for all 3 volumes.
At this moment, as far as I'm aware, the book is being sold with incorrect download instructions printed inside the cover so any purchaser must be prepared to make phone calls or send emails. The product itself is very good, without the hassle I would give it a 5 star rating

4.0 out of 5 stars NO CD! However...., 9 Jan 2013

The book does not come with CDs as is suggested in it's title. Instead you are given a web address and a code to go to the web page and download it from there. But the web page does not exist!
I wasn't going to give up that easily, so I navigated my way to the online store on acousticguitar.com, found the audio tracks associated with the book(which presumably the web address given in the book is supposed to direct me to), added them the my cart, proceed to checkout and add my discount code, which- according to the book- should allow me to download them for free. But the website says something to the effect of 'this is not a valid discount code'!!!
So, I'm going to email the company and ask for my audio tracks and will update if I make any progress

UPDATE: I emailed the company that made the book and they sent me a link to download the audio tracks so all is good!
