Peter Cushing, a part of an English film-watcher's mental landscape, lays out his life up to the late 1980's, something he later expanded on, in regard to his famous Hammer film roles, in a later volume of autobiography. He found his way onto the stage in pre-WW2 reportery theatre (after a hard struggle) and then went to Hollywood on spec, evntually getting a star contract. On outbreak of war he volunteered, only to be told his medical condition rendered him unfit for anything active. He nonetheless paid for his passage and partly worked his passage back to the UK, where, most importantly, he met his wife, a union mainly above the physical level. Both were sure they had met in previous life or lives.

Indeed, an important part of Cushing was his deep spirituality, which comes out in his story of attending a bullfight in Mexico. Disgusted, he leaves, but not before offering up a prayer both for the deluded human beings participating in the arena and for the bull so degraded and hurt in the "spectacle".

From the early 1950's, Cushing became a big star in England, both on TV and in film. He remained a recognized face everywhere in his own country until the end of his life. The last few pages indicate the belief of both Cushing and his wife, Helen, that they would, indeed, meet again, one day. This is a recommeded read, whether in large print or the ordinary size version I own, not presently available on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars PETER CUSHING... A GREAT ACTOR AND TRUE GENTLEMAN !, 21 Mar 2011
This review is from: Peter Cushing: An Autobiography and Past Forgetting (Paperback)
A great book for those interested in in movie autobiography. In fact I would go as far to say it is one of the best.
The banner for this book says An Autobiography and Past Forgetting. That being the case the reader is getting two books combined into one. An Autobiography obviously deals with his early life, his roots, struggling to get work as an actor and his eventual meeting and marriage to his beloved wife Helen, the woman who totally believed in him, when he was really down and felt he was a failure. The book ending in success and sadness.

Past Forgetting deals mainly with the Hammer years, his friendships with Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, his short stay in Hollywood looking for work, and the friendships he made there with Alan Ladd, Ida Lupino (she looked after him) and the many character actors/actresses and Hammer personnel he met during his career. Most of these friendships lasted a lifetime But mostly I loved some of the humourous and often hilarious stories he told regarding comical incidents and events which occurred on set during filming.

According to Peter, he first met Christopher Lee on the set of 'The Curse Of Frankenstein', Hammer's first big international blockbuster. Lee was dressed in his creature make-up and costume, they exchanged pleasantries. Peter continues: "But when Christopher removed his make-up.. I screamed"

I don't want to spoil this book for you by rambling on, suffice to say it is a genuine recollection of Peter Cushing's life and career. I bought this book in two separate volumes, and they are one of my treasured possessions. Now both books combined into one, the reader is in for a fantastic read.....Do not miss out on this great offer A Treasure!
