5.0 out of 5 stars Not a book but a Memorial, 17 Jun. 2014

This review is from: Gaza Photo Album (Hardcover)
This is one of the most thoughtful, the most chilling evocations of the effects of military aggression on the lives of ordinary people I have ever seen. In his introduction, Jaber Wishah moves from personal recollection to universal consideration. He writes: "The goal of most human beings … is to build a nest. Not for themselves, but for their children …" And he goes on: "One of the most fundamental human needs is the right to one’s own privacy. Once this personal space is attacked, or targeted, then everything collapses."
The photographs depict domestic spaces violated by the Israeli operation codenamed Cast Lead unleashed against Gaza for about three weeks from December 2008 to January 2009.
The very absence of inhabitants is the underlying narrative of the images: there is a list of over 1400 victims of the military offensive.
Gaza Photo Album is not simply a book. It is a memorial.
